Located on the eastern slopes of the Berkeley/Oakland Hills, Orinda's open spaces are one of the main reasons people are drawn here. Road and mountain biking, hiking along the extensive network of trails leading through the open spaces and rolling hills of Orinda, as well as proximity to Tilden Park, San Pablo Reservoir, Briones Open Space and the Lafayette Reservoir make Orinda a prime destination for nature lovers.
Orinda's small scale shopping district is centered along the main street and the Village Square. Orinda Books in Village Square offers a vibrant reading series, featuring local poets, and literary notables. At the center of Orinda nightlife is the revitalized Theater Square, anchored by the Art Deco Orinda Theater. Recently renovated, the Orinda Theater is home to the California Independent Film Festival, hosts independent films, and conversation with film stars. Recent guests include Rita Moreno, Tippi Hedren and Richard Dreyfus. In addition to first run films, the theater presents comedy nights and performances of live theater. The California Shakespeare Festival, located in Orinda's Bruns Amphitheater in the hills above town, presents live theater in a gorgeous outdoor setting of rolling grasslands.
Orinda is part of the Acalanes School District. Miramonte High School is at the top of the list of best performing high schools in all of California. An astounding 99% of its graduates go on to college.
